The Google Earth Blog has an article with this new animated layer for Google Earth from NASA. Along with this layer, the GE Blog also points out a couple of other layers that NASA has recently released. Here is a summary excerpt of this layer from the blog : "The ionosphere is used to bounce radio signals over the horizon for long distance communication. But, when storms occur on the sun"s surface they can mess up parts of the ionosphere and disrupt ionosphere-based communications." Check out the article for more information.

NASA Time Animation of Ionosphere

** This thread discusses the Content article: NASA Time Animation of Ionosphere **

One day up in my county in northern Alberta we noticed we were getting transmissions from an unauthorized source. After investigating, it was from a county in the far south over 700 miles away. I guess what happened was the ionosphere was perfect that day and was bouncing signals from Taber up to us up north. Normally our radios would cover around 100km or so from each repeater.
Has not happened since but it was a interesting and educational experience.
