M
agellan Mobile mapper 6 is a welcomed tool for both professional and recreational GPS users. The unit retails for around $1100 CND with the mobile mapper software. This unit does not come bundled with any GPS software for navigation or hiking because the main purpose of the unit is to be a tool in a surveyors arsenal. The Mobile mapper software will pick up ESRI standard point, polygon, and line files. Fortunately because of the Windows Mobile 6 operating system you can add you favorite pocket PC software for Geo-caching, hiking, training, or navigating the urban jungle. The power of the unit is not limited to GPS based applications. You can load any PPC software that is compatible with WM6. Lets take a looks at the unit and find its strengths and weakness's.

FEATURES

Operating System
- Windows Mobile 6
Screen -
Camera -2MP
Wireless -Blue Tooth
PC Connect -USB-Active Sync
Inputs -Buttons, Touch Screen
GPS - HS GPS Com1
Memory -SD Expansion sot
Other -LED Flash light
  -Mobile Mapper SW

The unit is well formed to fit in the palm of your hand. All the buttons have a nice tactile feel to them allowing the user to know when the button has engaged. Another great feature is the back light on the buttons. The joypad for controlling selections on the screen is a little stiff but feels rugged unlike the little joysticks found on the Explorist models or competing GPS devices. What you can not do with the joystick you can do with the touch screen.

The screen is very bright and easy to read indoors. Outside the screen has some glare and appears a little faded but still easy to read. The touch screen is great but has one limitation. It is very difficult to use your fingers in the corners because the screen is counter sunk almost half a centimeter into the case. IF you have small fingers no problem. You can use the stylus that comes in the bottom of the unit if you have hands as small as a young child. The stylus is a whopping 4 cm(1.5 inches). The average user will lose the stylus during their first use of the unit or get a finger cramp in after a few minutes of use. Probably best to pick up a multi-pack of regular sized stylus's and tote them along with the GPS.

Buy a bunch of screen protectors for the Mobile Mapper 6. Most likely you will use the most convenient pointy object to work the screen. Sticks, pens, keys, and so on will be your stylus in the middle of the bush.

The built in camera is a 2MP with 3X digital zoom. It takes decent pictures that you can geocode with collected waypoints or track logs using third party software. You can also record videos. Like most digital cameras the Mobile Mapper 6 works best in well lit conditions. Taking a picture in low light is not worth the memory space. Too bad there wasn't a camera flash built in.

The unit sports a bluetooth radio for wireless communications between devices. This means you can share your photos and other files with other BT enabled pocket PC devices.

Professional Software

I
f you are using the Mobile Mapper For GIS applications there are many Pocket PC applications available. The mobile mapper can be bundled with the "Mobile Mapping" software supplied by Magellan or ARC GIS by ESRI for US customers. Canadian customers can download the ESRI packages after the purchase of the unit from the ESRI page.

The optional Mobile mapper software works well and is easy to use. It was easy to find the areas to add new layers and set there main attributes. The buttons on the mobile mapper are made to be used with this software. Simply hit the log button and chose a layer and away you go. Once you have finished your survey the data is in ESRI SHP format so use with standard GIS software is a breeze.

Personal Software

Y
ou should choose the Pocket PC GPS software for the unit based on your main uses. If you are looking to do both outdoor recreation and urban navigating you will most likely need two different applications. For outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, boating, and geo-caching you will want a software that will support point to point routing, waypoints, and a tracklog. Mapping is great but not always necessary. You will be able to find free GPS software online for the PPC but you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a pocket PC software that is supported and generally more functional then some great applications are Fugawi Global Navigator, and OZI Explorer. When possible always try the free version of the software before committing to the purchase.

There are many applications available for the PPC that support street navigation. The user should choose the program based on features they find necessary. Some common features that people tend to like are text to speech, 3D maps, trip computer, external POI, upgradeable maps and so on. Some possible titles you may want to load on the Mobile Mapper 6 are I-Guidance, Tomtom Navigator, On Course Navigator, and more.

Conclusion

O
verall the Mobile Mapper 6 is highly recommended for use professionally and recreational. It is expensive for a personal GPS but you have to keep in mind it is a fully functional Windows Mobile Pocket PC. You can play your favorite mp3, write an email, take a couple pictures, or play your favorite PPC game.

The main distributor for the mobile mapper 6 is Gemini Positioning Systems in Calgary Alberta. www.gps1.com . You will probably get the best deal from them. Or they will set you up with one of their resellers to help you in your purchase.
