It doesn"t seem like the connected GPS market is the best place to be at the moment -- Dash just dropped hardware sales in a radical restructuring and Magellan"s halted development of the 5340 -- but Telenav isn"t shying away, throwing its hat into the ring with the $300 Shotgun. A $12/month GPRS subscription gets you the usual slew of web-enabled features like real-time traffic and weather, live POI searches, gas pricing, and online trip planning, all wrapped in the usual Telenav PND UI and bolstered by 11 million preloaded POIs. Sounds like an interesting piece of kit, and it"s apparently well done -- GPS Review took an early look at the 4.3-inch touchscreen PND and found it to be a "good start," albeit with some minor annoyances that will hopefully be remedied in a future software update. Still, we"re just not all that convinced that another subscription fee is going to appeal to many in this economic climate -- we"ll see if the Shotgun manages to fire. Peep tons more pics in the gallery.

After previous reviews last April, DM offers a fresh review named Maptitude 5.0 for Great Britain: One User"s Perspective. From this review: "Initially I was a skeptic. When first shown the product, I also had access to several of the market leaders in GIS (I still do). "Why," I wondered, "would I need another?" But Maptitude won me over with its ease of use, its stability when processing large data sets and its ability to handle non-native file formats, which now include various database and spreadsheet formats, image support, the ability to handle files from other GIS software, some compressed file formats and Ordnance Survey"s NTF. Maptitude 5.0 for Great Britain is now in its fifth year of existence." Read more of this story at Slashgeo. |

The Google Earth blog brings us news about this : "At long last, Google is releasing Google Earth for the iPhone (and iTouch) tonight! I"ve been expecting this to happen for months. Especially after I saw another Google Earth-like application on the iPhone back in May. Apparently some folks in Australia and Japan have already downloaded Google Earth for the iPhone. CNET has an initial review - and it looks fantastic. I quickly managed to download it - see my updated review below (the app is great!). You can click here to download GE for the iPhone from the iTunes app store. Or you can search the app store from your iPhone." Read more of this story at Slashgeo. |

Garmin nuvi 785T reviewed |

Garmin launched its updated 7x5 series of nuvi navigators back in August, but the high-end MSN Direct-equipped 785T is just hitting stores, and GPS Magazine says it"s a solid improvement over previous nuvis -- but if you"re not willing to pay the $50 / year for the MSN service, you"re probably not going to miss it. The 785T drew high marks for its fast frame rate, nice 3D lane guidance / upcoming turn features, and semi-realistic building displays, but the MSN Direct traffic implementation was less accurate than the free traffic service built into lesser T-series nuvis, and download speeds for the service weren"t particularly swift. We"re not all that sold on the connected GPS concept yet, so we"re inclined to take the reviewer"s advice and pick up the otherwise-identical non-connected 765T, but click on for the full exhaustive review to decide for yourself.Garmin nuvi 785T reviewed originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 13:11:00 EST. We"ve had our doubts about this Orange Gadgets outfit -- the same folks promising that entirely-too-wonderful iControlPad -- but it looks like the company is making good on its first promised product, the iGPS360. The little add-on module brings GPS to your jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, and is now available for order. Only 1,000 will be available out of the gate, at $75 (plus shipping) a pop. Since we haven"t seen one in the wild, it"s hard to know how well these modules will work, but Orange Gadgets has a pretty open development model, so feel free to page through the blog and see this thing through from concept to execution. Now, about that iControlPad...Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments |
